Paris, 1875 All I want is freedom, A world with no more night . . . And you always beside me To hold me and to hide me . . . A hope voiced from one lover to another on the rooftop of the opera house on a cold, frigid night, words that were meant for only each other's ears, yet little did Raoul de Chagny and young Christine DaaƩ know the Phantom was eavesdropping. Jealousy burned in the Phantom's heart, spurred by feelings of betrayal. Eventually, in a last attempt to force Christine's love, the masked man set the opera house aflame during the presentation of his Don Juan Triumphant.
Five years have passed since then, and the opera house has been restored to its former grandeur and reopened. A new set of hopeful ballerinas and singers now occupy the Populaire as new managers watch their progress, hopeful that their plight will be a success. Everyone avoids mention of the fateful evening, and it seems many are too afraid to even mention the opera ghost or even explore his lair, though the question is in the back of everyone's mind. Does he live? Is he still there? Will he haunt them again? Why don't you help shape this, our story?
