Name: Gareth Cleaver
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 40
Appearance: Rough; tall; broad-shouldered; well-built; long brown hair; sharp grey eyes. His hands and body are strong and toned due to his work in the smithy. His hands are rough and callous covered. Gareth’s hair hangs down to his shoulders and often into his sharp grey eyes, which give a whole new meaning to “steely” eyed. His broad shoulders rarely fit through conventional doorframes and his arm length leaves him wanting for shirts that fit. His wardrobe is simple, with clothes made for working in. He regularly finds that there are new holes in his clothes but he can’t sew to save his life. He will occasionally tie back his hair when working or when expecting company, which he rarely has. He also rarely shaves; he hates being bearded yet he hates the task of shaving. Gareth also wears riding boots though he rarely rides.
Claim is Gerard Butler
Personality: Confident, workaholic, sarcastic, says what he means and means what he says. Gareth Cleaver is obsessive to a fault for reasons he cannot explain; it’s just the way he is. He is always at work, hammering out the finest metal works in the entire region. Gareth is the only smithy in the town of Benevolence except for the addition of Benjamin Benson, his assistant. Gareth is very quiet and keeps mainly to himself. Gareth’s smithy is backed up to the graveyard, which many of the towns’ folk find to be rather odd but appropriate considering his loner status. Gareth doesn’t mind living behind Hallow Hill, it helps to keep unwanted guests from making random visits. The graveyard also helps to keep things relatively quite during the night, the dead make little noise. He believes that keeping to himself is the way to be at his best. He prefers very much to be left alone. The only company that Gareth keeps is that of Benjamin Benson, the young boy found half dead in the woods who is now a young man.
Gareth has a non-existent love life. He has no problem with love and frankly is in love himself. This is a fact that none know, not even Benjamin. He unfailingly loves the woman of the woods; what her name is and where she is from eludes him and he has only seen and been with her once, yet he loves her. He is not an unattractive man so while many in the village find him odd, he still catches the eyes of the towns young women. He also notices that many times young women will come to retrieve orders for fathers, brothers, and even husbands. He also knows that many come to see his young apprentice. However, he is more distressed by Benjamin’s lack of interest in the attention of these women. Gareth had taught him always to be polite and a gentleman however that is as far as young Benjamin will go with his interactions. Gareth sees Benjamin as a son and thus wishes he would find a young woman to court, but still he waits.
Gareth loves to hunt as well as work the smithy. He crafted his own rifle under the supervision of his grandfather, however he must admit that Benjamin is the better gunsmith. Hunting is what allows Gareth time to think and to be totally alone, even from Benjamin. Also, when he hunts he can occasionally feel the presence of the woman of the forest. He never sees her yet he can tell she is there. Gareth feels that the second part of his life began the night he met her and so the forest holds great importance for him. Little does he know the danger he is entering into just stepping foot there. That is however, what makes him human.
Gareth is also renowned for his way with children. Midwives often come to ask him for advice in caring for children or dealing with a rowdy child. Children also seem fascinated with the enormously tall and muscled blacksmith. He is also known for his ability to calm upset children. His capacity for caring for children has lead to many rumors. Some in the town say that at one time he had a wife and a child, but they disappeared into the forest and that is why he would go out into the woods, in order to find them. Others say that he long ago found a child and raised it in the smithy and that that child grew up and left for a far town to the north. Regardless of the rumors, which he allows to spread because he finds them amusing, he has a way with the children of the town and regardless of what the adults say the children love him.
Biography: Gareth was born and raised in the village of Benevolence. His father was a blacksmith before him, and his mother was the daughter of a hunter. His father passed away, from an unknown ailment, when Gareth was thirteen, so he and his twin, William, inherited the business. Gareth and William were mainly contracted to hammer out tools and other agricultural objects. However, Gareth’s true passion lay in the crafting of weapons and armor. Unfortunately, William was more of a thinker than a doer, a direct contrast to gruff Gareth. The two fought constantly, until finally William left the village with the intention of finding his fortune, and Gareth never spoke of him again, though their mother died soon after from what many were sure was grief. He was taught to hunt by his grandfather, a master hunter, and the two were quite close until the old man passed away from old age. When he was twenty-three years old, he was hunting in the woods and came upon a beautiful maiden with pale skin and sage-coloured eyes, completely naked to the winter air. Entranced, suspecting that he was soon to die, he allowed her to approach and kiss him -- and felt his life being drained away, though he found himself giving it quite willingly. The woman pulled away and began to run, and he weakly pursued her; they laid together that night, though when he woke to the morning sun there was no sign of her. He returned to the living in a state of shock, withdrawing into his work and obsessing over her memory. When a young boy was found unconscious near the village, he was eager to hear what the young man would have to say upon waking. The story he told terrified the villagers, but gave Gareth a rush -- for he was sure that the murdering race was the same as his phantom lover from the woods. He took the boy, Benjamin Benson, in as his apprentice and allowed him to live in the loft of the smithy. To Gareth’s great surprise the young man showed an incredible aptitude for metal work. Young Benjamin turned out to be the son that Gareth never had. However, Gareth was deeply troubled when Benjamin showed him a superbly crafted and beautifully fashioned pistol, with which the young man intended to avenge his father. Gareth’s feelings for the boy and the mysterious woman of the woods tear at him daily. He just hopes that his lovely woman from the forest is not the target of Benjamin’s vengeance.
