History: Bess was only three years old when Errol came to the village, but she heard about him enough -- his case being a strange one -- before finally meeting him at age nine. He was twelve then and beginning to take on more and more work in her father's stables. She liked his charming and easy manner, developing a childish crush; which she quickly ignored and discarded, because prettier, more flirtatious Mary Lynn had announced similar feelings, and there was no broaching it under those circumstances. So while Erick obviously was the playmate of choice, she managed to slip out from time to time to play with the boys. Now she is expected to act with him only as a proper lady, calling him by Mr. Eldridge and certainly not lifting her skirts around her knees to run muddy and joyous through the mud to give him hugs. She acts toward him as she is expected, but it often feels slightly awkward and forced, when she would much rather joke and tease like old times.
What Errol Thinks: She a lovely girl, one of his favorites along with her sisters, them being childhood buddies and all. However he wishes she'd act a little more like she did back then, no need to be a 'proper lady' around him.
