[Cadfael]

TO TAKE THE REIGNS.

The night was still quite young, the sun having sank but a few hours ago. Cadfael had left his wolf form for the humanoid shape, wearing old pants made of leather. His chestnut colored hair shimmered in the cold light of the moon. His pale, bare chest seemed to almost reflect the light away. In the later hours of the day the Gewyn was prowling through the forest, in search of some animal to quench his thirst. Autumn was always one of his more hated seasons. The animals were either starting to hide for the winter or too small for him, as it seemed. Cadfael's hands shook at the thought of his hunger. The physical strain the thirst put on him was clouding his thoughts. At this point his mind was quite single tracked; just find something to consume. Even in this clouded moment, Cadfael was smart enough to stay away from the village, even when a human would be a much easier source of food. His pale blue eyes almost glowed in the night, flickering back in forth trying to detect movement; just a small displacement of the brown autumn leaves. His ears were attuned to hear the footfalls of his prey. This night Cadfael was purely a predator, leaving any true kindness back in his wolf form. As far as Cadfael could remember now, as his humanoid self, he never really felt any true kindness before. Those hazed memories of his wolf self were not enough to pick out who he was in that past form.

After a few minutes of near-silent hunting Cadfael gave up and sat himself on the ground, dead, brittle leaves crunching under the weight of his body. Cadfael gazed up at the sky. All the little stars in the night's dark blanket-like sky were outshone by the envious moon. His referie was interrupted by the sounds of footsteps and soft breathing in the distance, coming closer. Cadfael bolted up, ready to make an attacking move on whatever the creature was. As he listened to the sounds of the nearing footfalls, he found that whatever the creature was had to be a biped; a large one at that. Cadfael racked his thoughts, trying to figure out what it could possibly be. There weren't many different creatures that were large and two-footed. Cadfael came to the conclusion it was either a fellow gewin or a human; and the scent of the creature definitely wasn't gewin-like. "So, there is a human out there who is actually brave enough to come into the dark dangerous woods? Perhaps it's intending a retaliation against the "wolves" for what happened to that foolish human female."

Enya’s bare feet crunched upon the dead leaves of the forest floor as she wandered, unseeing, into the deepest part of the forest which surrounded Benevolence. She was completely and dangerously oblivious to the threat surrounding her as she headed deeper into the forest, further and further away from safety.

Enya had never suffered from sleepwalking at home, so it could only be assumed that it was a result of the shock from her encounter with the Gewin. But whatever the cause, neither she nor the Bells had realised, despite the fact that she had been staying in their home for three nights already. Little did Enya know, she had wandered around outside the previous night, but tonight was the first time she had headed into the forest, towards certain danger.

She drifted through the trees, her pearly skin and pale golden hair eerily illuminated by the bright moon. She might not have woken at all had she not tripped over a tree root and been sent sprawling over the ground. The impact caused her to wake with a start, and she stared around her in a wild panic, unable to work out where she was or how she got there. Her breathing was coming in short, sharp gasps as she slowly stood up and turned around, peering through the trees, horribly afraid that it wasn’t all a dream. She leaned against a tree and tried to rationalise her thoughts. She forced herself to think of the monsters who had attacked her a mere few days ago – she knew that whether she stayed where she was or kept walking, she was still an easy target, and there was no escape from that. She decided that it would probably be best to stay where she was rather than risk trying to find her way out and ending up working her way deeper and deeper into the forest.

She managed to stay where she was for a few minutes, but she jumped at every rustle of a leaf, every noise from a small nocturnal animal, every creak of a tree, and soon she could bear it no longer, and she began to walk. She had managed to force herself not to run, as she knew this would attract even more attention to herself – even though all she wanted was to run for her life.

A movement up ahead caught her eye. The moon shone through the trees, illuminating a tall, human figure. It was unmistakeably a man, and a very tall man at that. Even at that distance, she could tell he had short chestnut brown hair, and was wearing a dark pair of trousers, with no shirt. This was when she knew that something wasn’t right – no one she had ever encountered would go out into the forest on a night as cold as that one with so little clothes on. ‘Run!’’ screamed the rational side of her mind. But she couldn’t move – she merely remained, rooted to the spot with fear, unable to tear her eyes away from the being stood just a few paces in front of her.
