AUBRY STRANGEWAY
UNDECIMBER TWENTIETH, YEAR LV

DENYING THE DARK.
LIKE A PRAYER UNTO THE DAWN,
Smooth river stones skimed across the surface of the river Branwen. Standing alongside the river on the grassy bank was the young man Aubry Strangeway, another near-identical river stone in his palm. He wore a tan autumn coat over his woolen clothes, since the days were growing colder. Everything that day was grey and dismal. The clouds that blotted out the sun seemed angry and threatened to rain soon, giving a warning with their darkened color. A typical dreary autumn day. Aubry heard flapping wings and looked to see a full grown duck land ungracefully in the water. Two other brown-feathered ducks followed the first into the river, floating lazily. Aubry felt the stone resting in his palm and launched it near the ducks. It landed short of the three creatures, sending them flying away in a flurry of feathers and water. The three flew a short distance before landing not much farther downstream. The dry, if not dead, tall, weedy grasses crunched under Aubry's worn, now muddied shoes as he walked along the bank, going upstream.
Although the grey clouds kept him from seeing the sun, Aubry's sense of time gave him the feeling the morning was approaching it's end, soon to be noon. The golden hours of near-silence were giving way to the sounds of the afternoon-waking birds. The lack of the usual noise meant that the rain wouldn't be long, but Aubry still had plenty of time on his hands. Time to do what? Just walk? What fun would that be? Next to nil. Was it better than hanging around the cottage or in the village center? Possibly, but people weren't Aubry's thing exactly. No, he was content with the open lands, but sometimes that quiet was just too much. Sometimes it was like being trapped under a thick woolen blanket, a blanket that was too heavy to lift off of yourself, during the hottest days of summer. It was suffocating, and almost depressing. Nonetheless, his hate for the others was enough to keep him from giving in and being a little social butterfly. He ran a hand through his strawberry blond hair, a butterfly. Such an ill-fitting comparison for himself. Try some sort of hawk; the solo bird. Then again, "little social hawk" doesn't work so well, which must be why he doesn't fit in with the others too well. They were all a flock of gulls and he was the odd bird out. Just like a hawk, he was happy with things that way.
