Why is Spain not as rich as Brittain?

A lot of countries in Western Europe including Brittain and Spain were Colonial Imperialist that exploited other countries under their imperial rule. This gave most countries in the western part of Europe an economic head start, Eastern Europe experienced the opposite and were oppressed states exploited by the U.S.S.R. which can be partially responsible for their economic set backs although certain states like Poland and Czech Republic are becoming more advanced and having a growing economy. Brittian was a powerful empire, the saying the sun never falls on the Brittish Empire proves its point but Spain was not far behind Brittain when their empire reached its peak. In fact Spain actually occupied countries within Europe such as Southern Italy and the Netherlands.
